Paws up

I made this a while ago on the nails of this girl I used to babysit. It's not too hard to make, all you need is a dotting tool! And some time and patience... ;) Later this week another manicure with these cute paws!

Chinese New Year

February the 3rd Chinese New Year will be celebrated, it's the date when the year of the rabbit begins. There was a Chinese New year themed nail art contest organized by Nail Art Express, the amazing blog I told you about before, and this is my entry!

I will tell you how I came up with this design, which might not look really Chinese New Year-like at first sight. You would probably expect something red and gold, the traditional colours for Chinese New Year. However, I chose not to use them for two reasons.

As the Singaporean girl behind Nail Art Express noted here, when you use these colours it's hard to avoid ending up with a design that borders on tacky. I definitely do like tacky nails sometimes, but I figured she doesn't - so my main goal became to avoid tackiness.

Of course I could have taken the challenge and tried to make a design with red and gold that was not tacky. But I didn't because since it was for a contest, I wanted my design to stand out. Everyone would probably use red and gold, wouldn't they?

Bottom line: average, tacky Chinese New Year nail art, no sir! So instead I came up with this. A quite cute design actually: light pink and gold with dots and a rabbit on each nail. I also added some Chinese signs using a nail art pen. I have no idea what they mean or if they even mean something, haha.

You can see the other entries (and vote) here

Unfortunately my entry wasn't included at first. The deadline was January 23rd, so I sent it this afternoon, but it turned out that it was already the next day in Singapore (the time difference is seven hours)! Haha, oops :)

Roses inspiration

I've seen many nails with these 'swirled' roses and today I decided to try it myself, with the help of this and this tutorial. I used a dotting tool for the dots and a toothpick for the swirling (watch the tutorials if you don't know what I'm talking about). I did a few different designs, just for your inspiration. Nobody (except for my family) will see my nails anyway, since I'm barely leaving the house these days (I have to study for a few exams).

Unfortunately I have to say that it was harder than I thought! It's not as easy as it might look to get nice swirly roses. But hey, in the end it doesn't matter: when you add leaves they'll look like roses no matter how ugly or undefinable your blobs of polish were. This is actually just one way of painting roses, I definitely will try some other ways in the future! I like cute designs!

Which nail do you like the most?

Dots all over

I really like allover patterns on my nails, for instance (and especially) polka dots. It isn't hard when you use a dotting tool, it only takes some time. I always start with a dot in the middle of the nail, and then add the other dots around it. Here are a few pictures of polka dot nails I made in the past.

This was the first time I tried it, and it worked out suprisingly well. I adore these colours. I only really dislike the fact that I included my cuticles when painting my nails! Ulgh. I'm older and wiser now. (This was a few years ago.)

Dark purple with matte dots! I had to take a photo with flash, or you couldn't see the dots. Off topic: I think the shape and length of my nails are absolutely perfect on this picture!

And this is the most recent one, I made this on my cousin's nails a few days ago. It's an attempt to an artistic picture, haha.

The clue for nice polka dots: be patient and precise. Good luck!

Pink roses

I made this cute design with pink roses for my younger sister. I think painting roses is overestimated, cause it's actually quite simple: a rose consists just of a few lines around a central point. I did it with a striper and I love how it turned out!

(Oh, I let her do the topcoat herself, not quite pleased with how thát turned out...)
